The explosion occurred near a church in the town. At the time of the incident, local residents were celebrating the Patron Saint’s Day, and hundreds of people were preparing to watch a fireworks display. According to AFP, video footage from the scene shows revelers carrying a cow made of straw, with fireworks being shot at it. This, according to the footage, seemed to ignite the large amount of fireworks stored in the church, leading to the explosion and causing houses to collapse.
The Office of the General Prosecutor of Mexico stated that the exact cause of the explosion is still under investigation.
