According to the latest information released by the Nepalese police on September 1st, the number of casualties caused by the mudslide disaster in Nepal has risen to 1010.
On August 26th, shortly after a mudslide hit the town, Dawa, a middle school teacher in Nepal, urgently organized 900 students to evacuate to higher ground, helping them escape this disaster.
Dawadi said that within just a few minutes before the incident, he received warnings of mudslides from four different people. One of the warnings came from a town upstream from the school. After learning that a large-scale mudslide was approaching the area, he immediately decided to cancel classes and instructed students to evacuate to higher ground immediately.
He recalled, "I decided that I couldn't delay any longer. Even if I didn't come in the end, it would only mean one less day of class."
Dawadi said that during the organization of the students’ evacuation, he saw with his own eyes a dormitory building about 100 meters away from the river being overwhelmed by the surging flood. He said, “If I hadn’t made a quick decision, even if it was just 10 minutes later, everyone, including the students and me, might not be able to be here today.”
The 16-year-old student Yonisha also recalled that Daudi’s decision saved them from disaster at the last moment. She said, “I was only 10 seconds behind my friends, and we might not have been able to escape.”
On August 31, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nepal stated that according to current data, approximately 590 foreign citizens from 39 countries have been missing in the mudslide disaster in the country.
On August 26, a massive mudslide disaster occurred in the Raiswan area of northern Nepal. On the 26th, the Nepalese government decided to designate some local administrative units in the affected areas as disaster crisis zones for a period of three months. This decision was made in accordance with relevant laws, in order to coordinate relief resources more effectively, strengthen personnel management, and promote post-disaster recovery efforts.
