Malaysia Airlines Flight 89 Aborts Takeoff at Narita Airport due to Mechanical Failure

According to Japanese media reports, at around 10:40 am on August 20, 2026, on Runway A at Narita Airport in Narita City, Chiba Prefecture, the aircraft of Malaysia Airlines Flight 89, a Boeing A330 from Japan to Kuala Lumpur, experienced a mechanical failure and had to abort its takeoff.

According to the Narita Airport Office, 148 passengers and 14 crew members were unharmed.

"I was sitting by the window when I started traveling, there was a loud 'bang' sound. I don't know what to do next." A passenger said.

Narita International Airport said, "Black smoke could be seen from the rear left of the aircraft." Narita International Airport Corporation (NAA) called emergency number 119, and the aircraft was moved to the apron by an aircraft tow vehicle. According to police and fire department officials, black smoke rose from behind the left engine of the aircraft, but no fire was confirmed.

The airport company stated that many parts were reportedly recovered from the vicinity. Due to the scattered parts of the aircraft structure, Runway A was closed immediately after the takeoff interruption. The runway reopened after about 2 and a half hours.
