In August 2024, a nationwide protest erupted in Bangladesh, which led to the resignation of then-Premier Sheikh Hasina and her departure from Bangladesh. Now she is living in India.
According to Reuters reported on June 29th local time, 78-year-old Hasiin had previously been sentenced to death by a Bangladeshi court. In an interview with the New Delhi Television (NDTV), she insisted that she was not afraid of risks and would 'overcome all obstacles and conspiracies' to return home.
"I want to be absolutely clear: I will overcome all obstacles and conspiracies and return to my country this year." The report said this was the first time Hassaena gave a specific schedule for her return.

In November last year, the International Crimes Court in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, issued a verdict. During the trial, prosecutors stated that the evidence they had found indicated that Hasina had ordered the use of lethal force to suppress protests during July and August 2024. Hasina was represented by a defense lawyer appointed by the Bangladeshi government. The lawyer argued that the charges were unfounded and requested the court to find Hasina not guilty.
The court ultimately ruled that Hasiina committed 'crimes against humanity' and sentenced her to death for killing several people during the protest.
Hasiya refused to accept this judgment and accused the Bangladeshi judicial system of being used as a “tool for political retaliation” aimed at removing the leadership of the Awami League she led.
"I am not afraid of death," she added when interviewed. The attempts to dismantle her political party in the past had all failed, and will continue to fail in the future.
Hassena claims that her plan to return to her country is not due to personal ambition, but rather to fulfill a greater mission – “to restore political rights, democracy, the rule of law, and the spirit of the liberation war of 1971”.
Hasina is the eldest daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding president of Bangladesh. She served as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh four times—in 1996, 2009, 2014, and 2019. She was elected as the Prime Minister for the fifth time in January 2024.
After resigning, Hasina fled to India and has remained there ever since. Previously, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh issued a statement demanding that India extradite Hasina back to Bangladesh.
