According to Reuters report on August 11, a Syrian court sentenced the former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to death absenting himself from the court. He was accused of committing crimes such as murder, torture, arbitrary arrest, and crimes against humanity during the nearly 14 years of civil war in the country.
This is the first guilty verdict against Assad.
On December 8, 2024, Syrian opposition forces captured the capital Damascus and announced the overthrow of the Assad regime. Assad subsequently announced his resignation and left Syria with his family to go to Russia. He is currently in Moscow.
The Syrian transitional government launched the first public trial of the 'key figures' of the Assad regime on April 26 this year.
According to reports, Atef Najib, a security officer during Assad’s reign, was also sentenced to death.
