Slovakia Opposes Large-Scale Ukraine Aid at NATO Summit

According to the 'Kiev Independent', Slovak Prime Minister Fico stated on June 27 local time that he opposes the plan to provide Ukraine with large-scale financial and military assistance at the upcoming NATO summit.

This NATO summit will take place in Ankara, Turkey, from July 7th to 8th. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy has been invited to attend. NATO diplomats told American media that the summit declaration includes a commitment to provide Ukraine with 70 billion euros in military support. Since U.S. President Trump returned to the White House, the United States has significantly reduced its aid to Ukraine and is not expected to participate in this aid program.

On the 27th, Fico told Slovak media that he opposes this ‘large-scale’ NATO proposal. He stated that he would consult with Slovak Defense Minister Robert Kalina to ensure that the country's delegation does not receive any authorization to ‘involve Slovakia in further military loans or financial contributions’ upon arrival at the summit.

Fico said that Slovakia chose not to participate in funding Ukraine along with NATO allies, but it cannot stop other countries that 'want to prepare for war'.

Do you know what might happen? A unmanned aircraft will land here, whether it's intentional or not. It could end up in an apartment building and cause casualties. We might face a third world war, which is why I say to Slovakia: I oppose wars; Slovakia won’t pay for the Ukrainian military spending.

According to reports, since 2022, NATO summits have focused on issues related to Ukraine’s support under the context of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, as well as Ukraine’s efforts to join NATO. However, the summit in 2026 will test the unity of NATO in the event of a major rift between the United States and other allies.
