Koizumi Calls for Yukawa's Apology for Taiwan Statements

Japanese former Prime Minister and President of the East Asian Community Research Institute, Koizumi Yoshiro, stated at the 21st Jeju Forum on the 25th that Japanese Prime Minister Yukawa Kei said should immediately correct her wrong statements regarding Taiwan and apologize. Her related statements clearly violate the spirit of the 1972 Japan-China Joint Declaration.

In the forum opening ceremony, Yoshihiko Koizumi said that the Japanese government should not support "Taiwan independence." The Japan-China Joint Statement recognizes the government of the People's Republic of China as the only legitimate government representing all of China, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China. Yukawa Satomi's erroneous statements regarding Taiwan contradict the stance of the Japan-China Joint Statement.

Michihiro Kudoh said that it is completely understandable for the Chinese government to be angry and dissatisfied over this. The Japanese government should clearly state to China that it will continue to abide by the Japan-China Joint Statement, especially by maintaining its position of not supporting "Taiwan independence."

Jeju Forum was established in 2001. The 21st Jeju Forum took place in Jeju, South Korea from June 24 to 26. Experts and scholars from various countries participated in in-depth discussions on how to maintain regional peace and prosperity.
