According to the Singapore-based newspaper The Straits Times, several European countries have been hit by heatwaves. France recorded its hottest night on record, and there have been several cases of drowning and suspected deaths due to high temperatures.
According to the French Meteorological Office, the national average temperature in France from the evening of June 22nd to the early morning of June 23rd reached 21.6 degrees Celsius, breaking the previous record of 21.4 degrees Celsius set in July 2019. This makes it the hottest night on record since 1947.
French Prime Minister Le Courbon stated that since June 18th, 40 people in France have died from drowning while seeking coolness at the seaside, rivers, or lakes during the hot weather. Most of the victims were young people. He described this as a “tragic disaster”.
The French Meteorological Service has currently listed 54 provincial administrative divisions as high-temperature red alert areas, which cover about half of the country's territory. This heat wave has been affecting French citizens since last week, with many outdoor activities being canceled, train services being affected, and more than 1,350 schools across the country having classes suspended.
On the 22nd, the Chinese Embassy in France issued a consular reminder about precautions against high temperatures. According to forecasts from the French meteorological department, the heat wave that has swept through France will continue until the end of this week. The highest temperatures in most parts of the country will reach 36°C, and in places like Paris, the temperatures may exceed 40°C. More than 40 provinces have issued red warnings for high temperatures, schools in many areas have canceled classes, and several train lines have experienced problems.
China Embassy in France reminds Chinese tourists visiting France:
1. Pay attention to preventing heatstroke and cooling down, reduce outdoor activities during high temperatures, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, stay hydrated, prepare anti-heatstroke medications, and if you feel unwell, call 15 for assistance immediately.
II. Pay attention to traffic safety. Before taking a train, check for any delays. If you are driving yourself, carefully inspect the condition of your vehicle and the tire pressure before driving.
