Trumps Shifting Stance on Post-Midterm Cooperation

In the 2026 U.S. midterm elections, the Democrats successfully gained control of both the House and Senate. In the face of significant setbacks for the Republicans, President Trump's statements on foreign policy changed several times.

On November 4th, local time, Trump's attitude became more relaxed during a live interview with POLITICO. Although he continued to emphasize that the presidential veto power is "ultimate," he revealed in the phone call that he had been talking with Democratic leaders for the past 20 minutes. He said he “wanted” to reach an agreement with his political opponents, rather than “veto everything.”

"We will cooperate with Democrats, ensuring the smooth operation of national affairs," Trump said. "This is very important. They have called to express their willingness to cooperate. Although we hold ultimate veto power, I do not want the next two years to be spent simply sitting there and vetoing everything."

Trump added that the Democrats have also shown a willingness to solve problems. For the sake of national interests, he will try to cooperate with them. He refused to disclose the identities of the Democratic officials he has contacted.

Facing internal party setbacks, Trump refused to publicly criticize any Republican candidate. “They just need to unite. Many people say that rising oil prices are due to Iran. But I am very sure that the decision I made regarding Iran for the long-term interests of our country and even the world was absolutely right, and it remains so.”

Earlier, Trump’s attitude was much more aggressive than it is now. In interviews with American media such as CBS, he revealed another plan: if the Democrats ultimately control Congress, he would frequently use the president’s “ultimate power” of veto to force bipartisan agreements. He even jokingly said he was ready to play the role of “Mr. Veto,” using this as a bargaining chip in negotiations with the Democrats.

Trump warned that if Democrats try to limit his powers through Congress, he would expand the scope of executive power. He also emphasized that regardless of the election results or the composition of Congress, he is confident in being able to implement his policy agenda over the next two years.

After admitting that his opponent had gained an advantage, Trump also posted a photo of a red baseball cap on social media, with the words "VETO" printed on it.

Later, when congratulating the Democrats, Trump changed his statement, saying that he was "a little surprised" by the election results, but would not restructure his cabinet and would cooperate with Democrats in many areas.
