Serbia parliamentary elections are set to take place on October 25th local time. On the 22nd, Vucic, who resigned as Serbian president on September 27th, promised before the election that he would not impose sanctions on Russia, nor recognize the so-called "independence" of Kosovo.
He said in the radio program on his home country’s PINK TV that: “Will we impose sanctions on Russia? No. Will we recognize Kosovo’s ‘independence?’ No. We will fight to maintain territorial integrity, and we will never accept its ‘independence’. We will strive to ensure that Kosovo remains within the framework of United Nations Resolution 1244, as part of Serbia.”
Vucic served as the Prime Minister of Serbia from 2014 to 2017. In April 2017, he was elected president and was re-elected in May 2022. According to Serbian law, the presidency is a five-year position, with the possibility of re-election. His second term was originally scheduled to end in May 2027.
On September 27 local time, Vucic spoke to the public and announced his resignation from the presidency. He stated that his resignation was to participate in parliamentary elections as an 'ordinary citizen' and to seek the position of Prime Minister of the new government.
According to reports, Vucic’s main competitor is Ilija Srdanovic, a 56-year-old cardiologist from Novizad. He leads the political group ‘Student List’.
