According to a report on the WeChat public account "Consulate Direct Link" on October 20, recently, several Chinese citizens have been detained by British border officials for long periods while entering or leaving the UK territory. Their mobile phones and other electronic devices have also been seized. The Chinese individuals involved in these cases include members of economic and trade groups visiting the UK, individuals coming to the UK for private visits with their families, as well as ordinary tourists.
British border officials claim that their actions are based on the relevant provisions of the UK's Anti-Terrorism and Border Security Act of 2019. The Chinese side is seriously concerned about this and has expressed its concerns to the British side. We will continue to urge the British side to stop arbitrarily detaining and inspecting Chinese citizens, and to do everything possible to protect the personal safety and legitimate rights and interests of Chinese citizens in the UK.
The Chinese embassy in the UK reminds Chinese citizens who are already in the UK and plan to come to the UK to significantly enhance their awareness of self-protection, protect their personal assets and privacy, and pay attention to understanding the relevant British regulations and practices, so as to avoid any inconvenience or losses during their travel into or out of the UK.
British citizens who need consular assistance can call the consulate offices in the UK for consular protection and assistance, as well as the Foreign Ministry's global consular protection and service emergency hotline.
