According to The New York Times, David Sabatini, a renowned biology professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), was fired due to sexual harassment allegations. On October 16th local time, he won his lawsuit against the accuser for defamation and received compensation of $6 million.
Sabatini is one of the top scholars in the field, having led a laboratory at the MIT Whitehead Institute for 24 years. His laboratory focuses on cell biology, with the aim of studying mechanisms related to neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, diabetes, and aging. In 2016, he was elected as a member of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States.
In 2021, an internal investigation at the Whitehead Institute found that Sabatini had had sexual relationships with Christine Knoss, a younger and less experienced female colleague. Sabatini held power that influenced her professional development. The investigation also revealed a sexually charged and unfavorable atmosphere in Sabatini’s laboratory, which forced her to leave the lab.
Knox said that this relationship occurred under 'coercion'.
But Sabatini denied that there was an “inappropriate atmosphere” in the laboratory. He insisted that his relationship with Knossos was voluntary between both parties. After he developed a liking for another woman, Knossos planned to frame him, with the intention of getting him fired and ruining his reputation.

The 58-year-old Sabatini said in a telephone interview after the verdict was announced: “It feels like a dream. I had been looking forward to this moment for a long time, but I often worried that I wouldn’t make it to this day—whether it’s economically, emotionally, or physically.”
Nearly five years after Sabatini filed a slander lawsuit, the jury in Suffolk County agreed with his claims and found that Knoss had committed slanderous acts, thereby hindering Sabatini’s employment opportunities.
The jury rejected Knos's counterclaim and did not accept her claim that Sabatini had sexually harassed and retaliated against her.
Knos's lawyer Eren Zake said on the 16th that Knos will file an appeal.
Our current era's harsh reality is that society still finds it difficult to believe women, and even harder to understand. When men control their fate, the difficulties women face are inescapable. Zak said this during the courtroom testimony.
Knox is currently an assistant professor of biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and also works at the Koch Institute for Comprehensive Cancer Research affiliated with MIT.
The report mentioned that accusations of sexual harassment ruined Sabatini’s academic career. After being fired by MIT and the Whitehead Institute, he discussed joining New York University. However, in 2022, students and faculty at New York University organized protests, and the university ultimately decided not to hire him.
In 2023, he was employed by the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry in Prague. He also established a branch of the institute in Boston, traveling frequently between Massachusetts and the Czech Republic.
Sabatini said that he hopes this judgment will help him gradually regain his reputation. "In the past, people spoke of me because of my excellent laboratory and my careful guidance for students. Most of the students have always supported me during this controversy."
I hope people can re-evaluate me based on scientific research achievements and educational outcomes.” he said.
Whitehead Institute issued a statement after the judgment, stating that the earlier lawsuits related to the institution have been dismissed. "Therefore, Whitehead is not a party in this case, and the judgment applies only to the two parties involved in the case, Dr. Sabatini and Dr. Knosses."
MIT spokesperson has not responded to the request for comment yet.
