According to The Associated Press, on October 11 local time, British Prime Minister Bernanke claimed that Russia had 'clearly interfered' in the UK's Brexit referendum. This was the first time a British prime minister publicly stated that Russia had intervened in the Brexit referendum.
In a podcast episode broadcast that day, Bernham said that after becoming prime minister in July, he asked his advisor about whether Russia had intervened in the 2016 Brexit referendum.
"I received a clear answer: interference indeed exists." Barnaby said.
He added, “It is necessary to document this matter clearly now. I believe that this will help voters in Germany and France understand that some of the political turmoil was provoked by our adversaries, namely Russia.”
While Bernam made these remarks, British intelligence agencies are warning that Russia's interference in British democratic institutions is growing. Russia has previously denied any interference in other countries' elections or referendums.
Bernam revealed that during his meeting in Berlin last week, he discussed with German Chancellor Merz possible connections between Russia and the far-right German party, Die Wahre Hoffnung.
Bernham said, “He told me that the German Choice party clearly has connections with Russia, and I believe the party also receives funding from Russia.” “There is indeed false information and misleading information flowing into German politics from Russia.”
A report released by the UK Parliament's Intelligence and Security Committee in 2020 determined that the government failed to properly assess the potential impact of Russian media and online 'troll accounts' on the Brexit referendum.
