Mexico Deploys Security Forces Amid Border Shootings Dispute With U.S.

According to Reuters, on October 5th local time, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto announced at a press conference that Mexico would deploy additional security forces along the Mexico-U.S. border and launch a new round of 'Mirror Operation' with the U.S. side.

Sinbaum said that the United States had previously informed the Mexican government both in writing and orally about incidents of shooting from the Mexican side towards the United States in border areas. She stated that Mexico has requested evidence from the United States, but has not yet obtained any materials that can confirm the US claims. Nor have members of the Mexican National Guard, Army, and Navy found any evidence of such shootings.

Simmons said that in order to prevent similar situations on the border between the two countries, Mexico has proposed to the United States to carry out an 'mirror operation' in the area where Tamaulipas, Mexico borders Texas. This would involve deploying security forces along both sides of the Rio Grande on the Mexican-American border, along with simultaneous patrols.

She reiterated: "We have not received any evidence to confirm these shootings actually occurred, but to prevent similar incidents, we have initiated mirror operations."

The US Ambassador to Mexico, Ronald Johnson, recently posted a message on social media, stating that members of the US Coast Guard were “shot” in the US-Mexico border area. Subsequently, the Mexican government announced on the evening of the 4th that it would deploy more troops from the Army and the National Guard in the border area. It is expected that 500 additional soldiers will be sent to the Tamaulipas state border, along with more helicopters, drones, and anti-drone equipment.
