According to reports by the Lithuanian National Broadcasting Station (LRT) on September 29, the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense recently spent nearly 48,000 euros on a party for its employees, which sparked public controversy. In response to criticism from the outside world, Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertais Kownas apologized publicly on September 29.
On September 10, the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense held a staff return party in the capital Vilnius. Approximately 200 people attended the party, including Minister of Defense Kaznas himself. The party cost 47,559 euros in total. Of this amount, 44,994 euros was covered by the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense, and the remaining amount was paid by the attendees. The expenses included catering, venue rental, on-site activities, and entertainment.
Lithuania's Ministry of Defense stated that this party was the only employee gathering of the department throughout the year, aimed at strengthening relationships and cooperation among employees, as well as fostering a sense of team spirit. However, the high costs of the party have raised questions in Lithuanian society. Lithuanian President Nauseda also expressed through her advisor that such expenditures could undermine public trust in the government's use of defense funds.
Facing controversy, Kounas later admitted that the cost of the party might have been too high. On the 29th local time, Kounas apologized for this matter, writing on social media: "Given the current geopolitical situation, was this form, timing, and cost appropriate? I believe they were not. Therefore, I sincerely apologize to those who felt angry, disappointed, anxious, or confused."
Kornas said that as Minister of Defense, he is responsible for the activities of that department. He has reached an agreement with the head of the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense union to establish clear and transparent systems for employee incentives and team building, and to ensure the proper use of funds.
LRT pointed out that Lithuania is continuously increasing its defense spending, which has led to significant attention regarding this incident. In Lithuania’s budget for 2026, defense spending accounts for 5.38% of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).
