According to a report by the Japanese Kyodo News, the 2025 population census released by the Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications on the 29th shows that as of October 1, 2025, the total population of Japan, including foreigners, was approximately 122.97 million. This represents a decrease of about 3.17 million people compared to the previous survey in 2020, which is a decrease of 2.5%. This negative growth has occurred for three consecutive times since the survey started in 2015.
Among them, the proportion of people aged 65 and above in the total population (aging rate) is 29.4%, reaching a record high. This represents an increase of 0.9 percentage points compared to the last survey.
In Japan, 30.1% of the total population is concentrated in four prefectures: Tokyo, Saitama, Chiba, and Kanagawa. This single-polarization trend is further exacerbated. Among the prefectures, only Tokyo has seen an increase in population, while the other 46 prefectures have experienced a decline in population.
The number of Japanese people in the total population has decreased by 3.5%, continuing a four consecutive decreases since the survey in 2010. The number of foreigners living in Japan has increased by 384,000, a 39.8% increase, reaching a record high. In terms of nationality, Vietnam and Nepal have seen significant increases.
