According to the Bangkok Post, on September 26 local time, Chacha Sidiwong, mayor of Bangkok, issued a statement from the municipal disaster prevention and mitigation committee, stating that due to continuous heavy rain causing floods, traffic congestion, and disruptions in daily life, 50 districts in the city have become flood-stricken areas.
The statement says that this move will enable the Bangkok municipal government, other national agencies, and local governments to respond to disaster-stricken areas more quickly and systematically.
Previously, continuous heavy rain caused flooding and traffic congestion in several areas of Bangkok. Eastern Bangkok was one of the most severely affected regions.
According to the meteorological department, the main cause of the unstable weather is a strong low-pressure system that covers the southern part of the central plains of Thailand, Bangkok, and its surrounding provinces. In addition, the southwest monsoon is also intensifying.
The meteorological department stated on the morning of the 26th that heavy rainfall across Thailand is expected to continue until Sunday.
Due to concerns that the flooding will worsen further, some communities have already begun experiencing panic-buying, with people scrambling to stockpile necessities.
