According to European News TV, an accidental friendly fire incident occurred during a NATO live military exercise in Latvia on the afternoon of September 25th, local time. An Italian armored vehicle suddenly fired at another armored vehicle, resulting in injuries to four Italian soldiers.
The Italian Ministry of Defense stated that at the time of the incident, the involved units were training at the Shidari training area in Latvia. An non-automatic weapon on one Italian armored vehicle fired at another Italian armored vehicle carrying four soldiers. The four injured soldiers all came from the 11th Shotgun Infantry Regiment of Italy and have been taken to a medical facility in Riga for treatment. One of them is in serious condition.
The Italian Ministry of Defense has launched an investigation to determine the exact causes and circumstances of this friendly incident. The Italian military emphasizes that this incident only involved their own army and had nothing to do with other countries.
Italian ANSA News reported that the incident involved two Italian "Dardot" infantry fighting vehicles. During the exercise, a 7.62mm machine gun on one of the infantry fighting vehicles suddenly began firing, hitting another infantry fighting vehicle ahead of it.
Currently, Italy has deployed approximately 300 soldiers at the Hidza Base in Latvia. They are part of NATO’s multinational forces stationed in Latvia.
