According to BBC News, in response to the overwhelming victory of the far-right German Choice Party in state elections, German Chancellor Merz said on the 7th local time that he was "deeply shocked" by this outcome.
Mertz said, "We didn't expect the results to be this way. From today on, the changes will not only affect Saxony-Anhalt state, but also the whole of Germany."
Mertz admitted that this result marked “the most devastating electoral defeat for the CDU in many years, decades.” Given the positive reaction from international far-right political parties, this result also affected “the international situation.”
Mertz also stated that he would not resign. He insisted that he has support from within the party and has no intention of shirking responsibility, and will stick to the policy goals.
On September 7th, preliminary results of the parliamentary elections in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, were released. The far-right party Alternative for Germany came out on top in these elections, receiving 43.8% of the votes. The Christian Democratic Party ranked second, obtaining 17.2% of the votes.
