The earthquake took place in the waters off the Philippines' Mindanao Island, at a depth of 40 kilometers, at 7:37 AM local time (Beijing time). Based on preliminary seismic data, the Tsunami Warning Center of the Ministry of Natural Resources believes that a regional tsunami may be triggered within hundreds of kilometers around the earthquake’s source, but it will not cause catastrophic damage to the coastlines of China.
