According to Yonhap, on September 4th, the suspect in the case of a Chinese student who was killed, Zheng Changsheng, was arrested and sent for investigation.
The Kyungshan Police Station in Gyeongsangbuk-do, South Korea, stated that the suspect, Zheng Changsheng, was arrested and taken for investigation that morning on charges of murder, destruction, abandonment, and concealment of corpses.
Zheng Changsheng is a Chinese-speaking university lecturer. He was suspected of killing Chinese female international student A (25 years old) at his residence in Heyangyi, Qingshan City, early on the 20th of last month. After destroying the body, he abandoned it in garbage dumps and barren hills in five regions including Qingshan, Qingzhou, Shangzhou, Daegu, and Gyunpu. He also hid some of the bodies at his residence. In order to interfere with the investigation, Zheng falsely reported the crime. He wore a woman's attire and went to Dongdaegu Station, where he turned off A's mobile phone near the station.
When being investigated by the police, Zheng Changsheng stated that he had a romantic relationship with person A. During the incident, they had an argument. Hearing that the victim wanted to inform the school about their relationship, he killed her out of fear of losing his job.
The police said it is difficult to determine the specific motive for the crime, but Zheng Changsheng showed a genuine physiological reaction during the lie detector test. The police also found that Zheng Changsheng's results on the Halstead Personality Inventory (PCL-R) indicate a score below 25 points (out of 40), which does not meet the standard for diagnosed mental illness in Korea.
At approximately 10:30 p.m. on August 20th, surveillance footage captured Zheng Changsheng leaving in a female disguise after committing the assault.
The police stated that, considering the surveillance at the crime scene, parts of the victims' remains found at Zheng Changsheng's residence and in other areas, the tools used in the crime, and the contents of the statements, there is evidence to support the suspicion of Zheng Changsheng in the crime. Previously, the police found parts of the victims' bones in Gyeongju, Sangju, and Daegu, and conducted searches and evidence collection at 14 locations including Zheng Changsheng's residence. They analyzed surveillance videos, the remains of the victims, and the items seized.
After Zheng Changsheng was taken for investigation, the police will continue to search for the remains of the remaining victims who were abandoned. They also plan to investigate further the suspicion that Zheng Changsheng intimidated other female students.
