According to the Iranian Student News Agency (ISNA), on August 31 local time, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran announced that a supertanker had run into a mine while passing through the Strait of Hormuz and caught fire. The ship has been stopped from sailing.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard stated that the oil tanker attempted to 'illegally pass through the southern part of the Strait of Hormuz', and caught fire after running into two mines.
The statement emphasizes that the rules issued by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard are mandatory, and any ship that violates these rules will face similar consequences. “All shipping companies should not be deceived by the provocations of the US military, nor should they unnecessarily put their assets and the lives of their crew at risk.”
Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Garrubabadi said on the 29th that the Strait of Hormuz is currently completely closed, and only ships that have received Iranian coordination and permission can pass through the strait. He emphasized that Iran has reached an understanding with Oman regarding arrangements for ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, but the strait will not be reopened until the United States fulfills its commitments.
