According to the WeChat official account of the Chinese Embassy in South Korea, on August 24th, Ambassador Dai Bing visited the cemetery of former South Korean President Roh Tae-woo to commemorate the 34th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and South Korea. Accompanied by Zheng Guanxi, the director of external cooperation at the 'Roh Tae-woo Center', he was sent on this trip by Roh Tae-woo's son, South Korean Ambassador to China Lu Jiexian.
Dai Bing paid tribute to the tomb of former President Lu Taiyu by offering flowers and bowing in mourning, expressing deep remembrance. Dai Bing stated that 34 years ago, senior Chinese and Korean leaders had a far-sighted vision, breaking the ice of the Cold War and making the strategic decision to establish diplomatic relations between China and Korea. This marked a new chapter in bilateral relations and effectively promoted peace and development in the region. "We should never forget those who dug the well when we need water." The Chinese side will not forget the significant contributions made by former President Lu Taiyu.
Dai Bing said that at the end of last year and early this year, the heads of state of China and South Korea visited each other, leading bilateral relations back on a path of improvement and development. Summing up the experience of 34 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and South Korea, strengthening friendly cooperation is in both parties' best interests. Under the new circumstances, it is hoped that both China and South Korea will adhere to the original intention of establishing diplomatic relations, seize the opportunity, promote what is good and eliminate what is bad, and drive China-South Korea relations towards healthy, stable, and positive development.
The Korean side expressed gratitude to Dai Bing for coming specially to pay respects, and stated that they were willing to carry on the legacy of former President Lui Tae-yu and make active contributions to the development of Korean-Chinese relations.
On August 24, 1992, China and South Korea held a signing ceremony for diplomatic relations at Diaoyutai in Beijing, which was broadcast live to the world. Through joint efforts, both countries broke through the ice of the Cold War and embarked on a new chapter of peace and prosperity in their regions. On September 27 of the same year, Roh Tae-woo made a state visit to China, becoming the first South Korean leader to visit China.
Lu Taiyu is originally from Shandong, China. In August 1992, Li Chunting, then the vice governor of Shandong Province, visited Korea. During the meeting with him, Lu Taiyu said, "My ancestral home is Shandong, and my ancestor was Jiang Ziya, also known as Tai Gong. I am also from Shandong!"
Luo Taiyu passed away in October 2021. Since then, the Chinese ambassador has visited Luo Taiyu's grave several times to pay his respects.
On August 19, 2025, the eve of the 33rd anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and South Korea, Ambassador Dai Bing visited Lu Taiyu’s grave in Paju. Lu Zaixian accompanied him.
