Overloaded Ship Capsizes in Nigeria, Killing Dozens of Children

According to Reuters, on August 19 local time, an overloaded ship in Sokoto State in northwestern Nigeria capsized. So far, about 40 child bodies have been recovered.

Nigeria National River Navigation Authority Regional Manager Abdulkadir Yusuf issued a statement saying: "I can confirm that approximately 40 child remains have been found so far."

According to a local traditional leader, Sarkin Daji, the accident occurred on the morning of the 19th. At that time, the passengers on the boat were preparing to go to the fields to plant or harvest rice.

Local resident Nashiur Goro said, “Local divers have recovered the bodies of the victims, and the search and rescue efforts are still ongoing.”

Nigeria frequently experiences fatal ship accidents, and the phenomenon of ships operating in violation of regulations is very common. In January this year, a waterlogged ship overturned in Yobee State in the northeast of the country, resulting in at least 25 deaths.
