In response to the memorandum of understanding signed with the United States two months ago, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad spoke again on August 16 local time. He stated clearly that this agreement was reached by Iran on the basis of "upholding dignity and demonstrating strength," and that Iran "did not yield to its enemies."
According to a statement released on the website of the Iranian President’s Office, Pahlavi Zardarani made the above remarks during a meeting of Iran’s national education department heads held in Tehran, the capital. He particularly emphasized that this memorandum of understanding was 'prepared after careful consideration and thorough expert discussions'.
Previously, Iran’s Islamic Council Chairman Karruboff also supported this agreement during an event on the evening of August 15. According to reports from the Iranian Islamic Republic News Agency, Karruboff praised this memorandum of understanding as a document that ‘brings honor to the country’ and strengthens Iran’s victories in the diplomatic sphere.
He also stated that the Iranian side has no intention of extending the cease-fire agreement with the United States, and has not yet decided whether to resume negotiations. The United States has violated the memorandum of understanding, and conflicts have rekindled, so there is no need to extend the “cease-fire agreement”.
Looking back, on June 17th, the United States and Iran officially released the formal text of this memorandum of understanding. According to the document, both the US and Iran committed to negotiate and reach a final agreement within 60 days. However, this agreement, intended to end the conflict, failed to maintain peace in the region.
On July 7th and 8th, the US military launched military attacks against Iran for the first time, claiming that Iranian attacks had occurred on merchant ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. In response, Iran also launched missile and drone attacks against US facilities in countries such as Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and Jordan.
Following that, U.S. President Donald Trump stated on July 8th at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization summit in Turkey that he believed the memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran had been “terminated”. The same day, the Iranian Foreign Ministry issued a statement alleging that repeated U.S. airstrikes were violations of the US-Iran memorandum of understanding.
A senator told ABC News: “This government is not prepared for this war. They have no plans on how to get out of this war, and they don’t really know how this war will escalate.”
