According to the American news site Axios, a senior U.S. official stated that on May 27 local time, Iran launched four unidirectional attack drones towards a merchant ship in the Strait of Hormuz.
The official added that the U.S. military downed those drones and also attacked another Iranian ground drone launch unit.
The U.S. Central Command stated in a statement that it had downed four Iranian unidirectional attack drones that posed a threat.
The statement also stated, The U.S. military also attacked an Iranian ground drone launch unit located in the port of Abadan. The unit was preparing to launch its fifth drone. These actions were carried out with caution and for purely defensive purposes, in order to maintain the ceasefire.
Reports indicate that this is the second similar minor conflict that has occurred within 48 hours.
According to The Wall Street Journal, two American officials said that the Iranian ground drone unit that was attacked poses a threat to U.S. military forces and commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
One of the officials said that American F/A-18, F-16, and F-35 fighter jets downed these drones. Subsequently, an F/A-18 fighter jet struck an Iranian ground-based drone launch unit.
According to reports by the Iranian Fars News Agency, around 1:30 a.m. on May 28 local time, three explosions were heard east of the port of Abbas. The air defense system was activated as a result.
