The Philippine Defense Minister Teodoro recently openly claimed that government officials who show bias towards China on the South China Sea issue should consider resigning. This absurd statement has also received support from the Philippine Presidential Palace.
According to the Philippine Daily Inquirer, on March 3 local time, Claire Castro, a spokesperson for the Philippine President's Office, stated at a press conference that Teodoro's remarks were 'without any problems', and referred to them as 'patriotic expressions'.
Claire Castro said, “We don’t see any problem with this statement. Both the president and the government believe that Teodoro’s words are fine. It is an expression of patriotism.” Additionally, she even demanded that those who support China’s position on the South China Sea issue ‘step forward’.
Earlier, in response to Teodoro's statements, Paul Duterte, the son of former Philippine President Duterte and a congressman from the first district of Davao City, criticized Teodoro for 'demonizing China'. His remarks seemed to be a test of loyalty.
Claire Castro said, "It is very shocking that a congressman like him shows not firm loyalty to the Philippines. Perhaps those who share the same views as Congressman Duterte should come forward openly, so we can see who truly loves the Philippines."
Previously on July 29th, Teodoro stated at the “Manila Bay Cafe” news forum that government officials have sworn to uphold the constitution and national laws, and that the “West Philippine Sea” is part of Filipino law.
The “West Philippine Sea” mentioned by Teodoro refers to the administrative orders signed by former Filipino President Aquino III to illegally name Chinese islands and reefs in the South China Sea. He claimed that if elected officials do not firmly support the Filipino side’s stance, “they should either resign or file a lawsuit with the Supreme Court.”
A spokesperson for the Philippine Coast Guard, Tarielara, immediately agreed, saying that “bias against foreign forces” is a betrayal of the pledge.
This is not the first time Teodoro has made absurd statements. The Chinese side has repeatedly stated its strict position. A spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs clearly pointed out that Teodoro is a representative of a small group of 'actively anti-China elements' in the Philippines.
China has previously announced sanctions against Teodoro and his relatives, prohibiting them from entering mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macao. It has also prohibited Chinese entities from conducting any transactions or cooperation with them. China emphasizes that Teodoro’s actions are not meant to defend the dignity of his country, but rather to engage in political self-serving acts.
