According to information on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website, on May 29, 2026, local time, Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and Minister of Foreign Affairs, held talks with Canadas Foreign Minister Anand in Ottawa.

Wang Yi expressed his delight at visiting Canada once again. Over the past few years, China-Canada relations have faced challenges. Under the strategic guidance of their leaders, relations between the two countries have taken new directions. Cooperation in various fields has resumed fully, and the main economic and trade issues between the two nations have been properly resolved. In January this year, Prime Minister Trudeau visited China successfully. The leaders of both countries agreed to promote the establishment of a new type of strategic partnership between China and Canada, which has clarified the direction for their joint efforts. The Chinese side looks forward to working with the Canadian side to implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of both countries. We will further explore ways to advance this new strategic partnership and prepare well for Prime Minister Trudeaus visit to China to attend the APEC Economic Leaders Meeting. This will ensure that relations between the two countries continue to develop in a healthy, stable, and sustainable manner.

Wang Yi emphasized that the ups and downs in China-Canada relations over the years have taught us that we must adhere to principles of mutual respect, seeking common ground while respecting differences, strategic autonomy, and mutual benefit through cooperation. Mutual respect means respecting each others choices regarding systems and core interests. The Taiwan issue is at the heart of Chinas core interests. China respects Canadas sovereignty and territorial integrity, and hopes that Canada will also firmly adhere to the one-China principle and implement it in practice. Seeking common ground while respecting differences means managing differences properly, maintaining dialogue and communication, and continuously bringing together similarities rather than engaging in microphone diplomacy. Strategic autonomy means promoting bilateral relations based on each countrys national interests, thereby avoiding interference from third parties. Mutual benefit through cooperation means making cooperation more effective, combining Chinas large market with Canadas resources and technology, and unlocking the potential for mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries.
Wang Yi stated that China is willing to work with Canada to steer bilateral relations in the right direction. Both sides should deepen cooperation in areas such as energy, finance, and law enforcement. Canada is welcome to participate as a guest country at the China International Import Expo. Efforts should also be made to strengthen cultural and regional exchanges, thereby strengthening the popular foundation of bilateral relations. Multilateral communication and coordination should be enhanced, along with efforts to reform and improve global governance.

Anand welcomed Wang Yis visit to Canada, stating that the Canadian side attaches great importance to its relations with China. At the beginning of this year, Prime Minister Trudeaus successful visit to China helped to re-establish good relations between the two countries, and efforts were made to develop a new type of strategic partnership between Canada and China. It is gratifying that exchanges at all levels between the two sides are becoming increasingly active. Cooperation in areas such as energy, finance, and trade is growing rapidly, as is travel between people from both sides. Canada appreciates that Chinese citizens receive visa-free access in Canada. Canada remains committed to its policy of one China; this position will not change. Canada believes that it is important for both sides to seek common ground while respecting differences. Through dialogue, we can enhance understanding and resolve conflicts. Canada is honored to be invited as the host country at the China International Import Expo. It hopes to increase exports to China by 50% by 2030. Canada is willing to work together with China to implement the achievements of Prime Minister Trudeaus visit to China. We will strengthen high-level exchanges, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, promote cultural exchanges, and enhance coordination and cooperation in multilateral affairs, thereby facilitating the better and faster development of relations between Canada and China.

Both parties agreed to establish a strategic dialogue mechanism between Chinese and Canadian foreign ministers. They also decided to resume political and security consultations between the two ministries, as well as high-level dialogues on national security and the rule of law.
Both parties also exchanged in-depth views on international and regional issues of common concern.
