According to Iranian national media reports, the plane carrying the coffin of the late Iranian supreme leader Khamenei has landed in the eastern holy city of Mashhad, and the burial ceremony is about to take place.
According to Agence France-Presse, citing Iran's official news agency IRNA, a Mahan Air flight landed in Mashhad, the hometown of Ahmadinejad, on Thursday (July 9). Ahmadinejad's coffin was transported to Mashhad after funeral ceremonies held in Najaf and Karbala, the holy cities of Iraq.
A video posted on the website of Iran’s supreme leader shows that at least one fighter jet escorted a flight carrying the body of Khamenei to Mashhad, where the final funeral rites would be held.
Hamenei’s coffin, along with that of Hamenei’s family members who died in the US-led air strikes in February, was transported from Iraq to Mashhad.
The memorial service for Khamenei took place in Tehran on July 3, with people from all walks of life in Iran, religious leaders, and officials from various countries attending. According to the official schedule, the funeral ceremony for Khamenei and his family will be held in Qom on July 7. At the request of people from Iraq, funeral ceremonies will be held in Najaf, a Shia holy city in Iraq, and Karbala on July 8. The burial ceremony will be held in Mashhad, a holy city in northeastern Iran, on July 9.
