Trump Comments on Khamenei Funeral, US to Resume Negotiations

On July 4th, local time, Iran held a public farewell and memorial ceremony for the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in the capital Tehran. According to Al Jazeera reports, U.S. President Trump said in a media interview on the 4th that he was surprised by the mourning scene of the Iranian people, and that the United States would not launch any attacks during the funeral ceremony.

Trump told the American Axios news website in a phone interview that he was "shocked" to see Iranian people crying at the funeral of Hassan Rouhani, and he thought "the Iranians don't like him".

He claimed that the United States could “eliminate all those who attend funerals,” but this approach would lead to “no one attending negotiations.” He revealed that the United States and Iran have decided to resume negotiations after the funeral of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, “Neither side will fire during the funeral.”

Iran's former supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in an air strike in the United States and Israel on February 28. The Iranian government announced that Khamenei's state funeral would be held from July 4 to 9, lasting for 6 days.

According to the arrangements announced by Iran, a public farewell ceremony will be held at the Khomeini Grand Mosque in Tehran on July 4-5. A funeral procession will take place in Tehran on July 6. On July 7, the body will be transported to the religious holy city of Qom for further funeral processions and prayer ceremonies. At the invitation of the Iraqi religious and social organizations, the body will also be taken to the Shiite holy cities of Najaf and Karbala in Iraq for religious memorial services on July 8.

On July 9th, Iran will hold a final funeral ceremony in Mashhad, the hometown of Khamenei. After that, the body will be buried at the Imam Reza Shrine.
