Hanwha Aerospace Explosion Kills Five in South Korea

According to Yonhap News, on June 1st, local time, an explosion occurred at the factory of Hanwha Aerospace in Wolsan-dong, Ewha District, Daejeon City, South Korea. The accident resulted in 5 deaths, 1 person suffering from full-body burns, and 1 person sustaining minor injuries.

According to reports, the Korean fire department issued a level-1 emergency response around 11:17 am that day. Over 100 firefighters and more than 30 pieces of equipment were deployed to carry out firefighting operations. The fire was completely extinguished around 1:07 pm, and the level-1 emergency response was lifted thereafter.

An accident caused a single-story factory building with a floor area of 544 square meters to be completely destroyed.

According to a relevant person from Hanwha Aerospace, the explosion occurred in the cleaning room of Building 56.

At a press conference held at 1 p.m. that same afternoon, the Rucun District Fire Department and the Rucun District Health Department stated that seven staff members were working on cleaning operations related to explosives at the time of the incident. Five of them died in the explosion, while the remaining two managed to escape on their own. Among the injured, one person suffered severe burns and is currently receiving treatment in the hospital; the other persons injuries are relatively minor, and after receiving treatment, he has been able to return home.

It is reported that Hanwha Aerospaces Daejeon factory has also experienced two explosion incidents in the past. In May 2018, an accident resulted in the death of two people at the scene, and three people suffered severe burns and died while being treated in hospitals. In February 2019, another accident caused the death of three people.
