Russia Demands Investigation Into Drone Attack on Stockholm Embassy

According to TASS and Russian Satellite News Agency reports, on July 2 local time, Russian Ambassador to Sweden Sergei Beliaev said that Russia has sent a note to the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the attack on its embassy in Sweden.

According to reports, Beliaev said in an interview with the Russian media website Vesti.ru that Russia expects the Swedish government to announce the findings of the investigation as soon as possible.

He pointed out that since May 2024, the Russian Embassy in Sweden has been subjected to more than 25 such attacks. “Today is the first time we have actually seen a drone itself. Apparently, it is a homemade device assembled using 3D printed components. I believe its flying range is limited, which means it was likely launched from somewhere in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden.”

In addition, Beliaev said that although drone attacks against Russian diplomatic missions have continued for two years, the Russian side has not yet received any findings from the Swedish authorities.

On the same day, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zakhareva stated that the Russian Foreign Ministry will summon Sweden's ambassador to Russia regarding this matter.

Russia Demands Investigation Into Drone Attack on Stockholm Embassy

The Russian Embassy in Sweden posted an announcement on the social platform "Telegram" stating that at 2 a.m. local time on the 2nd, the embassy was attacked by drones.

A quadrotor drone threw a container painted red towards the Russian embassy area. Another drone, carrying a mockup explosive device, crashed in an area near the main building of the embassy.

The Russian Embassy in Sweden stated that this situation indicates that the incident was not merely an act of provocation, but a attempt to intimidate Russian diplomats. "We clearly state our position: such schemes will never succeed."

The embassy stated that such incidents have become commonplace in this region. According to the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, the Swedish government is obligated to ensure the inviolability and safety of foreign diplomatic institutions within Sweden. However, in reality, Swedish law enforcement agencies only record these attacks against the Russian embassy in a formal manner. There have been dozens of such provocative incidents, and despite more than two years of investigation, there has been no resolution.

The Russian Embassy in Sweden stated that, under these circumstances, responsibility for any continued attacks against Russian diplomatic missions and all potential consequences arising therefrom must be borne by the Swedish side.
