According to Le Monde, a report released by the French public health department on the 3rd showed that France suffered from a record-breaking extreme heat wave during the week starting June 22. The number of deaths recorded during this period was nearly 30% higher than in the same period of the previous year.
In the same statistical period, the number of deaths in Paris increased by 62%, and a similar surge in deaths occurred in the region around the Loire River.
In June this year, France experienced a record-breaking heatwave that lasted about 11 days, with temperatures in many areas exceeding 40°C. In 2003, France also suffered from severe heatwaves, resulting in the death of approximately 15,000 people, most of whom were elderly residents in nursing homes.
According to reports, although the intensity of this heat wave was higher than in 2003, the French government stated that the actual consequences were relatively less severe.
