Since the evening of August 13th, Japan's Chiba Prefecture and other areas have been hit by the historic extreme rainfall event known as "Chiba Heavy Rain in August 2026". The rainfall in Chiba City reached 367 millimeters in 24 hours, which is about three times the total rainfall in August in previous years. The local area issued a severe rain warning at the highest level.

A quantum science and technology research and development institution in Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture, Japan, revealed on August 17 that the region experienced record-breaking heavy rain on August 13. This caused water to seep into some areas of the basement within the institution. Radioactive waste liquid was "possible to leak outside," but the specific composition was not disclosed.
