China Condemns Drone Attack on Belarusian Civilians at UN

According to the website of China's Permanent Mission to the United Nations, on June 29, Sun Lei, Deputy Representative of China to the United Nations, spoke at an emergency meeting regarding the drone attack on Belarusian civilians.

Chairman

I am grateful for Assistant Secretary General Bobbi's report.

The Chinese side has taken note of reports that a bus in the Russian province of Bryansk was attacked by drones. It expresses deep concern over the casualties suffered by Belarusian civilians in this incident. The Chinese side condemns any attacks against civilians. Under no circumstances should civilians become targets of attacks, and their safety must be protected.

In previous reports, we learned that both Russia and Ukraine have been suffering significant hardships recently. The number of civilian casualties in a single month has reached a peak since the war began, which is truly distressing. Even more unfortunately, the war has also caused serious spillover effects, frequently threatening the safety of people in other countries in the region. If this war continues indefinitely, it will only cause more harm and destruction. It will also bring untold suffering to more innocent people, and push the situation towards an even more unpredictable direction.

There is no winner in conflicts, and war does not solve problems. The Chinese side once again calls on the parties involved to maintain calmness and restraint, strictly abide by international humanitarian law, avoid attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure, and strive to cool down the situation, with a view to achieving a ceasefire and ending the conflict at an early date. It is also called for all parties concerned to intensify negotiations, demonstrate political will, and work towards eliminating the roots of conflict based on full compliance with the principles of the United Nations Charter, with the goal of reaching a comprehensive, lasting, and binding peace agreement.

Chairperson,

China has always maintained an objective and fair stance on the Ukraine issue. We follow the 'four shoulds' proposed by President Xi Jinping as our fundamental principle, and maintain contact with all parties, including Russia and Ukraine, to persistently engage in efforts to promote peace and negotiations. China is willing to work together with the international community to continue playing a constructive role in promoting a political solution to the crisis.

Thank you.

According to Russian Satellite News Agency, Belarus's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Valery Raybakov, stated at the meeting that the evidence held by Belarus proves that the attack on a Belarusian bus on June 17 was carried out by Ukrainian 'dart' attack drones.

Rebakov pointed out that Ukraine attacked a bus carrying 44 Belarusian citizens. Among the 44 people, 22 were children. The attack resulted in the death of one woman, and nine people were injured, including six children.
