According to the Jerusalem Post, Israel's Defense Minister Katz announced on June 29 that Israel is developing space laser weapons, thereby gaining the ability to strike from above Earth.
Katz said during a briefing for military journalists that "one of the core goals set by the Prime Minister and me is to recruit the best talent. To date, no country in the world has the ability to launch attacks in space. We must become the first country in the world to have this capability."
"If we achieve this objective, we will ensure that we maintain an advantage over those enemies who possess vast resources in terms of deterrence, offensive power, destruction capacity and other aspects." said Katz.
Previously, Katz said that Israel is committed to becoming a country with space attack capabilities, and this statement is his first time explicitly mentioning space laser weapons.
The Jerusalem Post believes that Katz's statement that "no country has the relevant capabilities yet" is questionable, and mentions that both Russia and China have carried out anti-satellite tests.
According to reports, Israel has successfully developed a ground-based laser system called ‘Iron Beam’. It is speculated that Israel also has the capability to use the ‘Arrow-3’ missile system to destroy enemy satellites. This system can currently strike ballistic missiles in space.
