Poland Threatens to Withhold Fighter Jets Unless Ukraine Delivers Drones

According to Polish media Polsat News, on June 29th, Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamys said that if Ukraine refuses to provide drone technology to Poland, then Poland will also not receive MiG-29 fighter jets.

Previously, the Polish military has repeatedly stated its willingness to exchange their remaining MiG-29 fighter jets for Ukraine's drone technology.

Kosiniak-Kramer revealed: “I proposed a proposal to the Ukrainian side that emphasized cooperation—exchanging MiG fighters for drones. The Ukrainian side initially accepted this proposal.”

But he said that the Ukrainian side subsequently withdrew its agreement. “They first agreed, and then changed their minds.”

He stressed, "Ukraine will not receive MiG fighter jets, because Poland won't get drones either."

When asked whether the decision to deliver military equipment to Ukraine without conditions in the early stages of the war was a mistake, Kosiniak-Kramers said, “I won’t interfere with this issue (with the previous government). I’m not interested in it. They don’t remember how much military equipment they have handed over. Today they try to cover up that fact,” he added. “I still say that they did the right thing. If I were in their position, I would have done the same. The situation in Ukraine was much more difficult at that time.”

When referring to the recent diplomatic tensions between Poland and Ukraine caused by the actions of Ukrainian President Zelensky, Kocińak-Kameš said: "In my opinion, President Zelensky is actively seeking his own benefits in domestic politics. He sees political interests in creating historical disputes with Poland, which is tragic, as this kind of decision-making can lead to a spiral that may benefit Zelensky, but will damage both countries."

According to previous reports, Zeleny signed an executive order in late May, naming a special unit of the Ukrainian army the ‘Heroes of the Ukrainian Resistance’.

This nationalist organization is accused of killing about 100,000 Polish civilians during World War II. In 2016, the Polish parliament declared the crimes committed by the “Ukrainian Resistance Movement” to be genocide.

Zelenskyy's actions have caused anger in Poland, and the massacre remains a wound that the country has not yet healed from. Poland has pressed for a change of name, but Zelenskyy has refused.
