According to Tass and RT, Serbian President Vucic stated on June 27 local time that Serbia will not abandon its friendly relations with China and Russia.
He was speaking to supporters in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, when he said: “We are walking the European road. However, we will not damage our friendly relations with countries such as China and Russia, and we will not abandon them when they face difficulties. We value these friendly relationships.”
He added: “Regarding accelerating our progress on the European routes, we will fulfill our commitments.”
Earlier that day, Vucic announced that he would resign from the presidency within a few weeks, and that Serbia would hold presidential and parliamentary elections ahead of schedule. He did not specify when he would resign or when the parliament would be dissolved, but stated that he would help his party, the Serbian Progressive Party, win both the presidential and parliamentary elections.
Vucic was elected president of Serbia in April 2017 and re-elected in May 2022. According to Serbian constitution, the presidential term is five years, with the possibility of re-election. Vucic's second and final presidential term was scheduled to end in mid-2027.
