China and 19 Nations Condemn Unilateral Tariff Actions as Abuse of Forced Labor

According to the website of the Chinese Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva and other international organizations in Switzerland, on June 25th, Jia Guide, the Chinese Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva and other international organizations in Switzerland, made a joint statement on behalf of nearly 20 countries at the 62nd session of the Human Rights Council. She criticized the unilateral bullying actions of imposing tariffs under the pretext of 'forced labor'.

The joint statement pointed out that eliminating poverty requires ensuring the right to work and development for people in all countries. We firmly oppose forced labor. At the same time, we are deeply concerned and strongly opposed certain countries abusing domestic laws, unilaterally determining that other economies do not effectively implement and enforce measures to prohibit the import of forced labor products, and using this as a pretext to impose additional tariffs. Countries that resort to forced labor in name of imposing tariffs will only undermine the right of workers in all countries to work with dignity, disrupt the stability of global supply chains, and undermine the international community’s efforts to eliminate poverty.

Joint statements urge relevant countries to respect objective facts, stop politicizing economic and trade issues, and weaponizing human rights issues. They call for taking practical actions to maintain the international economic and trade order, and to contribute to global development and poverty reduction efforts.

The joint statement received widespread support. Many countries, including Russia, Pakistan, Cuba, Venezuela, Sudan, and Cambodia, joined the joint statement. Developing countries also actively voiced their opinions in response.
