China Defends Argentina's Claim Over Malvinas Islands

According to a report on the website of the Chinese Permanent Mission to the United Nations on June 25, Sun Lei, Deputy Representative of China to the United Nations, spoke during the deliberation of the Non-Self-Governing Territories Committee of the General Assembly regarding the issue of the Malvinas Islands.

Chairman

China agrees with the statement made by the representative of Iraq on behalf of the Group of 77 and China. It welcomes the presence of His Excellency Minister Kinnon of Argentina at today's meeting. China expresses its sincere sympathy to the Venezuelan government and the affected people in the aftermath of the severe earthquake in Venezuela. It is believed that under the leadership of the Venezuelan government, the Venezuelan people will surely overcome this disaster and rebuild their homes as soon as possible.

China's position on the issue of the Malvinas Islands is consistent and clear. We firmly support Argentina's legitimate claim to sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands. China always advocates for resolving territorial disputes between nations through peaceful negotiations, in accordance with the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter. We hope that the UK will actively respond to Argentina's requests and resume dialogue and negotiations as soon as possible, in order to find a peaceful, fair, and lasting solution in accordance with relevant United Nations resolutions.

Chairperson,

The Falkland Islands issue is, in essence, a legacy of colonialism. At present, although colonial occupation has ended and the colonial system has collapsed, the world has still not been able to shed the shadow of colonialism. China supports the decision made by the United Nations last year to establish an International Day Against All Forms of Colonialism. The international community should take this as an opportunity to be vigilant against the harm caused by colonialism, eliminate its lingering effects, maintain international fairness and justice, and promote the democratization and legalization of international relations.

In September last year, Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed a global governance initiative, calling for the adherence to the principles of sovereign equality, compliance with international laws, multilateralism, a people-centered approach, and action-oriented policies. This is aimed at promoting a more fair and reasonable global governance system. In June this year, China released the white paper "Building a More Fair and Reasonable Global Governance System: China's Concepts, Initiatives, and Actions," further clarifying China's goals, principles, and action plans regarding global governance. Accelerating the process of decolonization, completing the decolonization efforts, and eliminating colonialist ideas are essential components of improving global governance. China supports the acceleration of the decolonization process for the 17 Non-Self-Governing Territories under the United Nations, and supports the relentless efforts of the people of these territories to strive for self-determination rights. China will continue to actively support and participate in the work of the UN Special Committee on Decolonization, striving to achieve positive results during the fourth International Decade for the Eradication of Colonialism, and fully fulfilling the historical mission entrusted by the United Nations Charter and the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples.

Thank you, Mr. Chairman.
