Kim Kyeong-hee Sentenced to 7 Years in Prison for Influence Peddling

According to Yonhap, on the afternoon of June 26, the Seoul Central District Court sentenced Kim Kyeong-hee, wife of former President Yun Seung-ho, to 7 years in prison for allegedly using her influence to sell favors and positions.

The final trial of this case took place on May 15th. The prosecution requested the court to sentence Kim Jian-hee to 7 years and 6 months in prison, and also asked the court to confiscate all the property that Kim Jian-hee received, along with an amount of over 56.3 million Korean won (approximately 255,700 yuan).

The ‘Kim Jian-hee Investigation Team’ pointed out that the defendant, taking advantage of the status and background of the presidential spouse, used various presidential powers as a means of private transactions to accept bribes on multiple occasions. This constitutes an act of ‘bribing with official positions’. The defendant received jewelry, luxury watches, artworks, and other items from entrepreneurs, politicians, etc., in exchange for public office appointments and business benefits. This behavior is not merely a simple personal fraud, but a serious criminal act that seriously undermines the fairness and integrity of state power.

Kim Kee-hee was accused of engaging in the act of accepting bribes under the Special Crimes Aggravation Act. Specifically, from March 15 to May 20, 2022, she accepted a necklace worth 100 million Korean won and other property from Lee Feng-gwan, the president of the construction company Rui Xi Construction. On April 26 of the same year, she received jewelry worth 2.56 million Korean won from Lee Pei-ryung, the former chairman of the National Education Committee. In September of that year, she received a watch worth 39 million Korean won from Xu Xingbin, a dog robot entrepreneur. From June to September of the following year, she received a Dior handbag worth 5.4 million Korean won from Choi Jae-yong, a pastor living in the United States. In February 2023, she accepted a fine art piece worth 140 million Korean won from Kim Sang-mun, the former minister and prosecutor.
