Venezuela Earthquake: Tsunami Warnings Issued

The American Broadcasting Company (NBC) reports that local tsunami warnings have been issued simultaneously in several areas of the southern Caribbean.

There was a significant shaking felt in a wide range of areas. Many residents in Venezuela and neighboring Colombia experienced intense shaking. Witnesses at the scene in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela on the east side of the earthquake, reported structural cracks in many residential buildings and commercial structures. Thousands of frightened citizens and office workers rushed out of the high-rise buildings and took to the streets.

Local emergency management departments confirmed that neighboring Aruba Island, CuraƧao Island, and the islands in the Dutch Caribbean region also experienced strong shaking.

After the earthquake, the United States tsunami warning system issued tsunami risk assessments for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, assessing the likelihood of seawater rising along the coastlines. Local governments in the southern Caribbean islands are monitoring tide levels in real time and reminding residents in low-lying coastal areas to be vigilant against abnormal waves.
