Deutsche Bahn Nationwide Train System Failure Causes Delays

According to Deutsche Welle, on the evening of June 23 local time, a nationwide technical failure occurred at Deutsche Bahn, causing all trains to be suspended for over two hours. Services are currently being gradually restored.

In the early hours of the 24th local time, Deutsche Bahn issued a statement saying that the fault causing the nationwide train cancellations has been temporarily repaired, and trains are now being sent to their destinations one after another.

German Railways' regional and suburban train operators also stated on the X platform that services are gradually being restored, but warned that large-scale train delays and cancellations may continue until the morning of the 24th.

German Railways CEO Eveline Palla told the German newspaper Bild: "We relied on emergency systems to maintain operations, and now we need to thoroughly investigate the root cause of the malfunction."

At the onset of the failure, Pala said that staff were "making every effort to guide the train into the station so that passengers could get off. The cause of the failure is still unknown, and we need to fix it as soon as possible."

Deutsche Bahn Nationwide Train System Failure Causes Delays

On the evening of June 23 local time, due to the suspension of train services, passengers were stranded at the station. DW

It is reported that the large-scale system failure of Deutsche Bahn was caused by a malfunction in the railway integrated digital mobile communication system (GSM-R), which is responsible for cross-border communication within the railway network. The failure was reported for the first time and lasted nearly two and a half hours. During this period, all trains in the country were stopped at stations, resulting in a large number of passengers being stranded.

German Railways stated that they apologize to the passengers affected by this accident and will provide taxis and hotel vouchers for the affected travelers.

On the evening of the 23rd, after all trains were suspended, Deutsche Bahn issued a notice stating that they had identified the source of the fault that caused internal communication interruption. Technical staff are currently handling the situation urgently.

Before the problem is completely resolved, news of train cancellations continues to come from various places.

In the early hours of the 24th, the state with the largest German population, North Rhine-Westphalia, announced that all trains were suspended due to technical faults. The Berlin public transportation department stated that communication failures caused all trains operated by Deutsche Bahn—including local, regional, and long-distance trains—to be shut down.

The official of the Stuttgart suburban railway also issued a notice: "At present, all suburban trains are stopping at stations and operating with suspension. Please check alternative transportation options through the travel information system. Once we have more information about the latest developments and the estimated duration of the suspension, we will inform you immediately."
