Sino-European Medical Devices Trade Matchmaking Meeting Held at 9th China International Import Expo

After reaching 16 consensus on economic and trade matters between China and Europe, the efforts of both sides to promote practical cooperation have been put into new practice at the Shanghai International Expo.

Today (November 5th), the Sino-European Medical Devices Trade Matchmaking Meeting for the 9th China International Import Expo was held in Shanghai. This event, which is included in the list of recent economic and trade negotiations between China and Europe, provided a platform for both sides to deepen cooperation in the medical devices sector and to address issues related to market access.

China-EU Chamber of Commerce Vice Chairman and President of the Shanghai Branch, Carlo D'Andrea, revealed to Observers Network that the chamber has assisted in coordinating more than 150 companies to participate in this medical device exchange event, and he hopes that the event will lead to tangible cooperation outcomes.

When talking about the attractiveness of the Chinese market, Dai Kaile said that despite the many uncertainties in the global economic and trade environment, China has proven itself to be a relatively stable destination for manufacturing, procurement, and investment.

From October 8th to 9th this year, Wang Wentao, Minister of the Ministry of Commerce of China, and Ján Figeac, Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security of the European Commission, held the second regular meeting of the China-EU Trade and Investment Consultation Mechanism in Beijing. Both sides discussed issues such as trade and investment balance, export controls, intellectual property rights, and WTO reforms, and reached a consensus on 16 matters.

According to a joint statement issued on October 9th, both China and Europe reaffirm their status as key trading partners. They stated that they will properly handle their differences within the framework of the World Trade Organization rules. They are committed to maintaining stability in bilateral economic and trade relations and to promoting a more balanced relationship.

Among them, medical devices have become a specific area where both parties promote practical cooperation.

The fifth item of the achievement consensus list clearly states that both parties will continue to maintain dialogue regarding issues related to the market access of medical devices. The European side welcomes the measures taken by China to expand imports of medical devices from the EU, including holding procurement matching meetings during the 9th China International Import Expo.

This not only clarifies the policy direction for both parties to continue dialogue regarding the market access of medical devices, but also makes the procurement cooperation during the China International Import Expo a specific arrangement for implementing this consensus. It becomes an important mechanism for ensuring the effective implementation of this agreement.

According to the official schedule announced by the China International Import Expo, the Sino-European Medical Devices Trade Matchmaking Meeting was held on the afternoon of November 5 at the National Exhibition Center (Shanghai). The meeting aimed to provide a platform for economic and trade exchanges in the field of Sino-European medical devices.

The medical device industry is characterized by high technology intensity, substantial investment in innovation, and strong needs for international cooperation. European companies have long-term expertise in high-end imaging equipment, diagnostic technologies, and medical devices. Meanwhile, China's vast medical market and growing demand for healthcare services provide opportunities for cooperation between the two sides.

Regarding this docking event, Dai Kailuo expressed clear expectations.

He stated that the China-EU Chamber of Commerce welcomes the medical device enterprise matchmaking event held during this Expo. The chamber is also happy to assist in coordinating more than 150 enterprises to participate, and hopes that this matchmaking can lead to tangible results.

In Dai Kaile's view, the China-EU Trade and Investment Consultation Mechanism is an important channel for maintaining open dialogue and resolving bilateral economic and trade issues.

He commented that several encouraging results were achieved in the Sino-European economic and trade consultations in mid-October. If these results are fully implemented, they will contribute to improving the trade and investment relations between China and Europe.

Apart from medical devices, he also mentioned the progress made in communication regarding market access in industries such as aerospace, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. Additionally, there has been progress in facilitating exports of rare metals and permanent magnets, and discussions are underway to reduce customs duties on certain goods.

This special docking for medical devices is also a reflection of how this edition of the China International Import Expo has attracted active participation from European companies.

According to previous information from the Ministry of Commerce, the 9th China International Import Expo was held in Shanghai from November 5th to 10th. A total of 4,142 overseas enterprises participated in the exhibition. Among them, enterprises from European countries such as Germany, the United Kingdom, and France had the largest exhibition areas.

At this edition of the China International Import Expo, there are both "old friends" who have been participating for many years, as well as European companies participating for the first time. German industrial giant Siemens is participating for the ninth time, focusing on showcasing its innovations in industrial artificial intelligence, digital manufacturing, and green transformation. Siemens plans to sign cooperation agreements with several Chinese companies during the exhibition.

Meanwhile, Dutch paint and chemical companies such as Akzo Nobel, and global steel manufacturers like ArcelorMittal based in Luxembourg also made their debut, presenting innovative products and solutions in the fields of green materials, high-end steel, and low-carbon technologies.

From industrial manufacturing to healthcare, from green technologies to consumer goods, European companies continue to use the China International Import Expo to showcase their innovative achievements and expand their market in China. They are also looking for opportunities to deepen cooperation with Chinese enterprises.

As the economic and trade consensus reached between China and Europe in recent times gradually enters the implementation stage, the China International Import Expo has not only become a platform for displaying products and technologies, but also provides a new opportunity for both sides to transform policy communication into practical cooperation.
