An Italian chef who was fired from a restaurant in Brisbane refused to add pineapple to his pizza, claiming that doing so would be an 'insult to his culture'.
Davide Tamburella was fired from the now-closed La Costa restaurant in May this year. In the past two weeks, he had meetings with management, who complained about a series of behaviors by the chef.
One of the complaints was that Tannerella refused to serve ham pineapple pizza to guests at an event. At that time, the chef stated that any instructions from management “should not be followed if they offend their culture.”
These details were revealed after the chef filed a complaint with the Australian Fair Work Commission regarding his unfair dismissal.
The ruling published by the committee on the 3rd day stated that Tannbrella refused to add pineapple to the pizza because 'as an Italian, he believed that adding pineapple to a pizza would be an insult to his culture'.
The ruling also noted that this is the third time in the past four years that Tamburella has refused to use this fruit in pizza.
