Rob Yeuten was born in Feyher, North Brabant Province, the Netherlands in March 1987. He is the youngest Prime Minister in Dutch history. From January 2022 to July 2024, he served as the Minister of Climate and Energy in the cabinet, and also briefly held the position of Deputy Prime Minister.
In October 2025, elections were held in the Dutch House of Representatives. Both the 60-60 Democratic Party and the Liberal Party won 26 out of the 150 seats in the House of Representatives. However, the 60-60 Democratic Party became the largest party by a narrow margin of less than 30,000 votes. On January 30th, various parties announced an agreement to form a coalition government. In February, the new Dutch cabinet, led by Ytten as Prime Minister, was sworn in before King Willem-Alexander in The Hague.
According to reports, in the Netherlands, surrogacy is only allowed for altruistic purposes, which means that surrogate mothers do not receive any compensation.
The regulations regarding surrogate pregnancies vary greatly among EU countries. Some European nations, such as Italy, explicitly prohibit surrogacy, and those who violate this law may face imprisonment. Other countries, such as Ireland, Greece, and the Netherlands, have enacted laws that allow surrogacy for altruistic purposes.
On the same day, the Liuliu Democratic Party issued a statement saying that this pregnancy was made possible thanks to a couple they knew from Yeten, who already had children.
"Gestational surrogate is a woman from the Netherlands, and the egg donor is also...," the statement mentions, "this is not commercial surrogacy. The gestational surrogate mother and egg donor are acquaintances of Yvette and Kiran. They are delighted to be able to help realize the dream of two fathers having children in this way."
Surrogate mother Lisa said, "Being a surrogate mother feels like a very special way of helping to realize the dreams of our dear friends."
Despite this, the Prime Minister announced that the surrogate birth of a child was under discussion in the Netherlands and caused massive controversy there.
While many people offered congratulations, many netizens did not accept the statement regarding ' altruistic surrogate pregnancy'.
In the comments section of the related report, someone pointed out: "Corrected—the surrogate mother carried a child. Yeten purchased it and took it away from his/her mother." Others said: "So our prime minister is involved in human trafficking. Paying a woman to buy a child! It's disgusting, too disgusting to describe in words."
