Anthropic Halts Access to AI Models After U.S. Export Control Order

According to the American Consumer News & Business Channel (CNBC), on June 12 local time, American artificial intelligence (AI) startup Anthropic announced that in order to comply with export control regulations issued by the U.S. government under 'national security powers', the company has disabled access to its AI models Fable 5 and Mythos 5.

The company stated that it received an order at 5:21 PM Eastern Time, instructing it to suspend all access rights for “all foreign citizens, whether within the United States or abroad, including Anthropic’s foreign employees,” to the aforementioned model.

To ensure compliance, Anthropic has disabled the above model for all users. However, it indicates that accessing all other models of Anthropic will not be affected.

A few days ago, Anthropic announced Fable 5 and Mythos 5. According to reports, the company claims that these two powerful models are at the highest level in many industry benchmarks. Particularly for Fable 5, new safeguards can prevent responses in certain high-risk areas, making this the first time Anthropic has released such advanced products to the public.

According to the introduction, these two models are based on the Claude Mythos Preview, which attracted the attention of Wall Street investors and U.S. government officials in April this year due to its advanced network security features. The company has stated that it does not intend to release these models widely, but only to restrict their use within a select group of companies, as part of the ‘Project Glasswing’ network security initiative.

In a statement on the 12th, Anthropic stated that the US government did not provide specific details regarding its national security concerns. The company apologized to customers for this service interruption.

Anthropic said: “As we have previously stated publicly, we believe that the government should have the right to prevent unsafe deployments as part of a transparent, fair, clear, and technically based legal procedure. Such actions do not conform to these principles.”
