Cyberattack Paralyzes French Supermarkets

According to French news channel BFMTV, on October 12th local time, a large-scale cyberattack affected hundreds of supermarkets. The hacker targeted the management system of refrigeration equipment produced by the Danish company Danfoss, and currently, many supermarkets in France are using this equipment.

Reports say that hackers remotely triggered a large-scale operation for cooling devices to enter a continuous defrost mode, causing the temperature inside the devices to rise sharply to extremely high levels.

The president of the chain supermarket Intermarché, Les Mousquetaires group, Thierry Cotillard said, "This attack forced all our refrigerators to enter defrost mode, with temperatures reaching up to 50 degrees Celsius. It was a disaster."

Cortiller said that in order to ensure "the food safety of customers," the group’s employees "emptied the products on the affected shelves all day long."

He estimates that the losses caused by this cyber attack across France could amount to tens of millions of euros.
