IMF Sees AI Driving Global Economic Growth at 2026 Meeting

On the 12th local time, the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group in 2026 opened in Bangkok, Thailand. According to the Spanish newspaper El País, IMF President Georgieva said on that day that artificial intelligence (AI) is driving global economic growth. Despite the energy impact caused by the conflicts in Iran, the global economy is still expected to grow by 3% in 2026.

Georgieva said, “Whether you like it or not, artificial intelligence has arrived. For the labor market and public finances, this is a wave, albeit one that comes more gently.”

Georgieva stated that the countries that have benefited the most from the development of artificial intelligence are “the United States, China, and India”. However, the construction of infrastructure such as data centers will also provide impetus for development in many other countries, “Thailand is one of them”.

Georgieva said that artificial intelligence will affect "60% of jobs in developed economies and 23% of jobs in developing economies."

She admitted that some job positions have been squeezed by artificial intelligence, while other job positions have increased in demand, such as construction workers who are paid relatively low.
