On October 12, Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning presided over a regular press conference. A Reuters reporter asked whether the US State Department last week claimed that China's maritime activities off the east coast of Taiwan seriously undermine regional stability. What is the Foreign Ministry's comment on this?
Mao Ning stated that China has repeatedly clarified its position on this matter. China has exclusive economic zones and continental shelves in the waters east of the Taiwan Strait. Activities conducted by China in these waters are entirely within the scope of China's sovereign rights and jurisdiction, and are lawful and unquestionable. It is never China that provokes disturbances or disrupts stability in these waters. The Taiwan issue is a Chinese internal matter, and no external interference is allowed. The US should abide by the one-China principle and the three joint communiques between China and the US, handle the Taiwan issue carefully, and take practical actions to maintain the overall situation of Sino-US relations and regional peace and stability.
